FARRELL TEMPTED MONROE WITH CHOCOLATE [09 Oct 2006|11:45pm]

haha, this is a little odd but pretty cute:

FARRELL TEMPTED MONROE WITH CHOCOLATE

Hollywood heart-throb COLIN FARRELL tried to woo late screen legend MARILYN MONROE when he was a boy - even though she died 14 years before he was born. The MIAMI VICE actor attempted to lure Monroe to his beside by saving chocolate for the blonde bombshell to enjoy, regardless of the fact she passed away in 1962. He says, "I used to leave Smarties (small chocolate sweets) under my pillow with a note saying, 'I know you're dead but these are very tasty and you should have a few. I won't tell anyone.'"

Marilyn Monroe's ''Smoldering'' Image Returns

Wednesday October 4, 11:29 am ET
Velvet Collection 2004 is a ''Must Have'' for Marilyn Admirers, Collectors and Wine Lovers

NAPA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Much like a phoenix emerging from the ashes, Marilyn Monroe rose anew today with the debut of The Velvet Collection 2004. Everyone knows how truly incandescent Marilyn Monroe was, but no one could have predicted just how hot she would become last October, when a warehouse fire destroyed nearly all of The Velvet Collection 2003 featuring a label with the lithe 22 year-old Ms. Monroe in the unforgettable pin-up photo that graced Playboy magazine's first issue in 1953. Emblazoned on our collective memory, that photo has become a truly iconic image, and avid collectors and wine connoisseurs alike lamented the lost opportunity to collect something as unique and iconic as the screen legend herself.

Now, back for a return engagement, the label for the 2004 vintage of The Velvet Collection, a tasty blend of the finest Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, features the same famous photograph but with some stylish alterations: Marilyn poses seductively on a flaming red velvet background but this year a golden, sequined overlay discreetly covers her most memorable assets. When the wrap is gently removed, the stunning original photo is revealed. In addition, new peek-a-boo packaging houses Marilyn in a rich red presentation box, which cleverly protects the bottle while exposing the modest label.

The individually numbered, limited edition of The Velvet Collection 2004 is available as a magnum (1.5 liter) bottle that comes in a sealed gift box for $225 or in a three-bottle, numbered, wooden-boxed set consisting of a standard (750ml) bottle, a magnum (1.5 liter) bottle, and a double magnum (3.0 liter) bottle for the price of $1000.

The voluptuous label of The Velvet Collection is the result of a licensing agreement with Marilyn Wines and Playboy Enterprises, Inc., and the photo reminds one why Marilyn Monroe was chosen as the magazine's first Centerfold.

"Two great icons of sensuality of the twentieth century are Marilyn Monroe and Playboy, the combination of the two has since proved to be legendary," stated Sarah Haney, vice president, licensing, Playboy Enterprises, Inc.

The Velvet Collection 2004 is a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon and 46% Merlot wines from Napa Valley made under the direction of noted winemaker John McKay. The resulting wine is as silky, smooth and seductive as the star on the label.

Marilyn Wines' owners Robert and Donna Holder comment, "Last year's fire not only destroyed most of the 2003 Velvet Collection, but it broke our hearts. Over the years, everything connected with Marilyn has become more and more treasured, as have our limited-edition, finely crafted wines. The Velvet Collection is coveted by Monroe fans and collectors alike. Many tell us that they purchase several bottles of each vintage, one for consuming now, one for future enjoyment and one as a valuable collectible."

The Velvet Collection 2004 is part of a family of wines by Marilyn Wines that feature Marilyn Monroe including Marilyn Merlot, Marilyn Cabernet, and Norma Jeane. The first release of The Velvet Collection, with a different image of Marilyn from the same 1949 photo shoot, was the 2002 vintage.

Sexiest celebrities

By KEVIN WILLIAMSON, SUN MEDIA

Today, Sun Media concludes a three-part series looking at the 50 greatest sex symbols to ever hold the popular culture sway -- from movie stars and singers to athletes and models.

They are the individuals who, thanks to good genes and more than a little of that elusive ingredient we call charisma, really are too sexy for themselves -- and everyone else

2. Marilyn Monroe: If Marilyn had lived, she wouldn't be on this list. She'd be 80 years old now, probably forgotten, resigned to the meagre existence of a mortal. But in death -- alongside James Dean and other perished-too-young stars -- she was harnessed in time, as much an ideal as a person. Could she act? Does any one even remember? It doesn't matter. What they do know -- even those born decades after her death -- are the freeze-frames and flashbacks: Monroe with her white dress blown up around her hips, Monroe singing Happy Birthday to J.F.K., Monroe cooing in newsreel footage. She's a T-shirt, a stamp, a logo, a brand -- and one of the most recognizable and replicated brands on Earth, whether it's Christina Aguilera echoing her now or Madonna channeling her in 1984's Material Girl video.

Becks and Monroe 'top style icons' [22 Sep 2006|11:55am]

Becks and Monroe 'top style icons'

David Beckham and Marilyn Monroe have been named the all-time style icons of the past 50 years.

The former England captain may be mocked for his fashion sense but he topped a list of male stars which included Cary Grant, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.

Wife Victoria could only manage seventh place in the female list, just pipping supermodel Kate Moss.

Hollywood legend Monroe remains the ultimate style icon for women, 44 years after her death. Audrey Hepburn was second while Diana, Princess of Wales was ranked third in the survey by Canon.

Madonna was fourth, ahead of Fifties screen beauty Grace Kelly. In sixth place was original supermodel Twiggy, followed by Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, Sophia Loren and Kylie Minogue.

"Trends come and go but style is something that, for these icons, is constant," said Heat magazine's Hannah Perry.

"It's fantastic to see Marilyn Monroe topping the polls for all time. She really does epitomise style. Just looking at her name conjures up beautiful, truly iconic images of her captured throughout her life.

"Her domination of this poll was no doubt helped by the likes of Scarlett Johansson and Gwen Stefani adopting her style."

In the male stakes, the top three consisted of Beckham, Cary Grant and Elvis.

Singer David Bowie was fourth, and the likes of Frank Sinatra, James Dean, Robbie Williams and John Travolta also featured in the list.

I just thought that this was too cool. Out of everything that was lost, Marilyn was the only thing that survived. Almost reminds me of "The Unsinkable Molly Brown". But in this case, it's more like "The Unsinkable Norma Jean" or something along those lines. ;)

Also....

If you go here, you can vote for Marilyn as the most beautiful woman of the century. I found the link in abeautifulchild community, so thought I'd post it in here for those who aren't members of that community.

LA's oldest orphanage, once home to Marilyn Monroe, closes

LOS ANGELES The oldest orphanage in Los Angeles has closed its doors.

The 125-year-old Hollygrove children's residential treatment center was once home to Marilyn Monroe. She was brought there when she was 9 and her mentally ill mother was unable to care for her.

The county Department of Children and Family services says the orphanage must close because 6- to 12-year-old children shouldn't be under institution care anymore. All but 10 of Hollygrove's children have been placed with members of their extended families or family friends. The remainder have been sent to other group homes.

Hollygrove began in 1880 when two women used a horse and buggy to rescue abandoned children from the city's dusty streets.

Unseen Marilyn photos:

BARCELONA, Spain (AFP) - Almost 30 previously unseen photographs of legendary US actress Marilyn Monroe went on display in a Barcelona gallery, taken shortly before her death by photographer Arnold Newmann.

The 29 black and white originals, which will be on display at Barcelona's Hartmann Gallery until October 24 date from January 1962, when Monroe was attending a gathering at the Beverly Hills villa of Hollywood producer Henry Weinstein.

Monroe is pictured surrounded by friends, including poet Carl Sandburg, in a series of stylised scenes.

Seven months later Monroe was dead, having taken an overdose of barbiturates according to a controversial official autopsy.

Photo-journalist and portrait snapper Newmann, 84, immortalised various personalities from Picasso and Stravinsky to Bill Clinton and Francoise Sagan, for various publications including Life magazine.

Here's where I need the help:
Does anyone have any close up pictures of Marilyn's make-up? In color? Or does anyone know any sites that tell you how to do your make-up like Marilyn? I want this to look perfect! (I'm dressing up as her for my boyfriend and my year and a half and serenading him with "I Wanna be Loved by You")

From marilynmonroe.com:

07-18-2005

Many artists found a muse in Marilyn and created breathtaking masterpieces featuring hee immortal image.

The rare assemblage showcases the works of 80 artists who found inspiration in Ms. Monroe. Included in the exhibit are works by Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Andy Warhol.

The exhibit will tour a total or eight cities in the United States and Europe. The Saginaw Art Museum has an exclusive in the state of Michigan, although the honor came with a hefty price tag. The touring agency will allow Saginaw pay the $120,000 total over the next four years. The jaw-dropping price is due in part to the intercontinental locations of the various pieces of art.

“The show deals with every aspect of her life – her stardom, the men in her life – and she’s in every image,” said Michael S. Bell, the curator of exhibitions and collections at the Saginaw Art Museum.
